A brand archetype is a known character that gives your brand personality a shape. Most B2B brands fit one of five archetypes: Sage, Ruler, Caregiver, Hero or Creator. Choose the one your customers already see in you. Use the three-question test below.
Learn these skills in the course Brand Management (MC-BM), outcome 1.
Who This Is For
B2B brand managers and owners who want a brand character that is not generic.
Five Archetypes That Fit B2B
| Archetype | The Customer Feels | Illustrative Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sage | You understand the problem better than we do | An engineering consultancy that explains each risk with data |
| Ruler | You bring order and control | A logistics firm that promises every delivery slot on time |
| Caregiver | You look after us | A payroll provider that answers staff questions for the client |
| Hero | You win the hard jobs | A contractor that finishes projects others gave up on |
| Creator | You build what did not exist | A software house that designs systems for each factory |
The Three-Question Test
- What do customers thank you for most often? Match it to the “customer feels” column.
- Which archetype does your best sales person act like in a meeting?
- Which archetype fits your proof: data, schedules, service records, rescues or designs?
Choose the archetype that gets two or three of the answers. Write it into your brand book.
Example: A Testing Laboratory
Take a testing laboratory in Shah Alam. Customers thank it for clear reports that explain each result. Its proof is data. It chooses the Sage. Its posts now teach, and its proposals explain.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing the Hero because it sounds strong, with no rescue stories to prove it.
- Mixing three archetypes. Choose one main archetype.
- Keeping the archetype in a slide. Put it in the brand book and the tone words.
Try It This Week
Read your last ten customer emails or reviews. Mark each one with the archetype it shows. Count the marks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many archetypes are there?
The common model has twelve. For B2B, these five are a short list to start with.
Does the archetype change the logo?
Not in every case. It changes the tone, the pictures and the stories first.
