Stress is the body’s response to pressure. It rises with a deadline and falls when the deadline passes. Burnout is different: it comes from chronic workplace stress that has not been managed. WHO lists three signs: exhaustion, mental distance from the job and lower work performance. (WHO, ICD-11)

Who This Is For

Supervisors and employees who feel the pressure, and HR staff who look after wellbeing.

The Stress Continuum

PointWhat It Feels Like
1. PressureA full inbox or a report due on Friday. Pressure helps you focus.
2. StressYour heart beats faster, your sleep gets lighter, small problems feel large.
3. Chronic stressThe stress does not switch off at the weekend.
4. BurnoutYou feel empty, you stop caring about the work, and your output falls.

Signs of Stress

  • Physical: tense shoulders, headaches, a tight chest, poor sleep.
  • Emotional: irritation, worry, a short temper with colleagues.
  • Behavioural: more coffee, less exercise, work taken home every night.

Signs of Burnout

  • Exhaustion that a weekend does not repair.
  • Cynicism: the job, the customers and the company all seem pointless.
  • Lower output: more errors, missed details, work that takes twice as long.

Burnout costs the company too. It shows as absence, errors, conflict and staff turnover. Some staff sit at the desk but do not work.

Three First Steps

  1. Measure it. Use a short self-check such as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). A number is easier to act on than a feeling.
  2. Sort your triggers. Mark each one: I can control it, I can influence it, or I accept it. Act on the first group this week.
  3. Use one quick technique. Box breathing: in for four counts, hold for four, out for four, hold for four. Do four rounds.

When to Get Help

Do the signs of burnout last more than two weeks? Then talk to your doctor or your Employee Assistance Programme. In Malaysia, call Talian HEAL 15555, the Ministry of Health helpline. It is open 8 am to midnight daily. (The Star, 22 October 2026)

Employers have a general duty for the health of their employees at work. (Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, section 15)

Try It This Week

Write down three things that caused stress this week. Mark each one: control, influence or accept.
