Buyers buy benefits, not features. A FAB table turns each feature into an advantage. Then it turns the advantage into a benefit. This post gives you the table and five before-and-after product lines.

Who This Is For

Product, sales and marketing staff who list features but do not sell.

The FAB Table

Feature (What It Is)Advantage (What It Does)Benefit (What the Buyer Gets)
Stainless steel bodyDoes not rust in a wet kitchenNo replacement for ten years
Cloud backup every hourData is safe if a laptop is lostNo lost work, no lost day
Same-day delivery in the Klang ValleyStock arrives before the shop opensNo empty shelf, no lost sale

Five Before-and-After Lines

Before (Feature)After (Benefit)
1,200 W motorSmoothies in 30 seconds, before the school run
IP67 ratingWorks in the rain on site, all day
ISO 9001 certified plantThe same quality in every batch you order
24/7 hotlineA person answers when your line stops at 2 am
Halal certifiedYour customers buy with confidence

How to Build Your Table

  1. List five features of one product.
  2. For each, write what it does: the advantage.
  3. Ask: so what, for this buyer? Write the answer as the benefit.
  4. Test each benefit with one sales person and one customer.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Stopping at the advantage. Ask “so what?” once more.
  • One benefit for every buyer. Each buyer persona can need a different benefit.
  • Technical words in the benefit. Use the buyer’s words.

Try It This Week

Take your best-selling product. Write three FAB rows. Use the benefit lines in your next sales email.
