Kognifi Preparation Before Taking the PMP Exam

A strong base in project management practice helps you prepare for the PMP exam. Learn to plan, schedule, manage risk and control a project before you study for the exam. This post shows who the PMP certification is for, the skills to build first and a short preparation checklist.

Who This Is For

  • Project managers who plan their next career step.
  • Professionals whose role needs project management skills.
  • People who want to manage projects to plan, on time and on budget.

What Project Management Is

Project management is the work of planning, organising, executing and controlling resources, tasks and activities to reach a goal within a set time and budget. It uses knowledge, skills, tools and methods to meet the project requirements.

Skills to Build Before the Exam

  • Leading and managing a project team.
  • Communicating with stakeholders and keeping them engaged.
  • Managing time and resources.
  • Assessing risks and solving problems.
  • Using project methods such as Waterfall, Agile and Scrum.

The course follows the practice described in the PMBOK Guide and the three PMP exam domains: People, Process and Business Environment. You work on real project cases in a workshop: simulations, group discussions and case studies.

ModuleWhat You Practise
1. Project Management Concepts and ToolsProject phases and checklists; the scope of work for Waterfall, Agile and Scrum projects
2. Creating the Project Plan, Schedules and BaselinesThe work breakdown structure, network analysis, Gantt charts and Kanban boards
3. Project Risk ManagementThe risk register, risk action plans, mitigation and contingency plans
4. Controlling the Project to Planned BaselinesProject trackers, scope creep, change requests and recovery actions

A Short Preparation Checklist

  1. Read the eligibility rules and the exam content outline on the PMI website.
  2. List your project experience against the three domains: People, Process and Business Environment.
  3. Practise the core tools: a work breakdown structure, a schedule network and a risk register.
  4. Learn the methods in a structured course with real project cases.
  5. Set your exam date, then plan your study weeks back from it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reading the theory only. The exam asks about real project situations.
  • Studying one method only. Know Waterfall, Agile and Scrum, and when each one fits.
  • Leaving risk and change control to the last week. They take practice.

Try It This Week

Take one project you ran this year. Write its scope of work, its main risks and one change request. Mark the step you found hardest.
