A boss gives orders and checks the work. An enabler makes the goal clear, removes the blocks and lets the team decide how to get there. Teams led by enablers take more ownership. This post gives you five shifts from bossing to enabling and a weekly routine to practise them.
Learn these skills in the course Leadership Reimagined (BL-LR), modules 1 and 4.
Who This Is For
New and current team leaders who give clear instructions, but whose team waits for the next instruction instead of taking ownership.
Five Shifts From Bossing to Enabling
| From Bossing | To Enabling | What You Do Differently |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Purpose | Explain why the work matters before you explain how to do it. |
| Control | Influence | Agree the result and the deadline; let the person choose the method. |
| Authority | Authenticity | Say what you value and act on it, also when it costs you. |
| Reaction | Self-awareness | Notice your first reaction under pressure, then choose your reply. |
| Power | Trust | Share information early and keep the promises you make. |
A Weekly Enabling Routine
- Monday: tell each team member the one result that matters most this week, and why.
- Ask each person: “What is in your way?” Write down the blocks.
- Remove one block per person before Wednesday, or tell them who can remove it.
- Midweek: ask for progress, not for detail. Ask: “What help do you need?”
- Friday: give one piece of specific feedback to each person: what worked and what to change.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Calling it enabling but still deciding every detail. The team notices the difference.
- Removing all structure. Enabling needs clear goals and deadlines.
- Enabling the strong performers only. Each person needs the result, the reason and the help.
Try It This Week
Pick one task you usually check line by line. Agree the result and the deadline with the person, then do not check the method. At the end of the week, ask them what they would do differently next time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is enabling the same as being soft?
No. An enabler sets clear goals, deadlines and standards. The difference is that the team chooses the method.
When is a direct instruction still right?
In an emergency, or when safety or the law is at stake. Explain the reason afterwards.
What does the course add?
It starts with self-knowledge: your values, your thought patterns and how you react under pressure. You leave with a personal leadership development plan.
